BREAKING NEWS: Rep. Mike Krusee arrested for DUI

The booking photo

State Rep. Mike Krusee, R-Williamson County, was arrested and charged Wednesday night with driving while intoxicated.

Rep. Krusee, the chair of the Texas House Transportation committee, was booked into the Williamson County Jail at 11:15 p.m. last night, and after a night in jail he was released at 8:55 a.m. with a $1,000 bail.

Why is the Chair of the powerful House Transportation Committee out driving drunk?

Who posted his bail?

I am looking forward to getting my hands on the arrest photos...More to come.

KRUSEE DUI WATCH UPDATE:
10:05am: A reliable source tells me Krusee failed the Field Sobriety test.

10:20am: The Statesman report:

"DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange said a trooper spotted a vehicle in the 1300 block of Briar Hollow Drive near U.S. 183 and RM 620 with an and being expired registration and being driven erratically. Mange said the trooper noticed a strong smell of alcohol and administered a field sobriety test, which she said Krusee failed.
She said Krusee refused a Breathalyzer test."
1:00pm: The arrest affidavit. Krusee carried and passed legislation in 2003 that created something called the “driver responsibility program” to help fund the Texas Mobility Fund. That program included a number of surcharges for driving offenses, including $1,000 for a first conviction of driving while intoxicated says Statesman new article.

The Statesman got it wrong. It's closer to $2,500 to $3,000.

1:35pm:
an email comes in from another source, I've not had time to confirm any of it, other than I know that old home address is correct:
If you look in the Williamson County Appraisal District records for the street address where Krusee was arrested, you will find that his ex-wife, Leigh, lives on that street at 13231 Briar Hollow Drive. She got the house in the divorce settlement. I will let you figure out the rest of the story"
1:45: Houston Chron says:
Krusee was placed under arrest at 10:14 p.m. and transported to Williamson County jail in Georgetown, where he refused a breath test, triggering the administrative license revocation law....
4:30pm: I find Paul Burka's (Texas Monthly) take on how this could be an issue for a future appointment:
"...Williamson County is notoriously tough on violators of any sort, especially DUI, and the ensuing trial could imperil a future appointment to the Texas Highway Commission, for which Krusee is widely believed to be in line after his term expires in January 2009. There has always been a question about whether Krusee’s advocacy for the Trans-Texas Corridor would pose a threat to his confirmation by the Senate. He became a pariah in the House in 2007 when members finally realized what they had voted for in 2003 without bothering to read the bill, but his relations with senators did not seem to be impaired."
Burka could be right.

Other thoughts...I think Krusee is still married.

I know for a fact that Krusee has NO college degree, so how could he even be considered for TxDOT's top position?

Leigh and Mike Krusee are not divorced and Mike still resides with family on Briar Hollow Drive.

I can confirm that, living in the area. Poor guy, almost made it home. I'm sure he'll get off the hook on this one.

Mike was just drinking some of that good ole' "something for nothing" 200 billion proof TTC & toll road privatization Kool Aid.

It looks like rest of the legislature can't put it down either.

It's been FIVE YEARS since HB 3588 was passed by our politicians, followed by two successive transportation legislation train wrecks.

A sobriety test should be given to every member of the Texas Legislature.

EMAIL FROM RICHARD:

Texas reporters are lazy & stupid.

How hard is it for them to check that it's $3000, not $1000 ? AP reports $1000 so they all go along...

Annual surcharge for certain convictions
Drivers who receive a conviction for any of the following offenses that occur on or after September 1, 2003 are required to pay an annual surcharge for three years from the date of conviction.

Krusee needs to resign, effective immediately. Staying in office after an embarrassment like this is a sign of nothing more than ego. The seat is BARELY in GOP hands, and Krusee will drag the GOP down and put the seat in Democratic hands if he won't resign.

Maybe he doesn't care. But this is his screw-up, he needs to own it, and he needs to take one for the team.

Of course, it might be better for the cause of toll-free roads if the GOP does lose this seat.

Well maybe the seat will be in better hands with a Democrat. The Texas GOP seems to be about nothing but Toll Roads.

The arrest happened two houses down from my home...it was after 10:15 pm - if he was noticed on the access road to 183 - that is more than a mile away from where he was pulled over - in a neighborhood with lots of children - forturnately, it was night! However, many people were out walking their dogs/jogging that night. Democrat or Republican ...Do as I say not as I do? Resignation please and stay out of public office - work on your boozing issue.

Kru$ee's going to keep his head low and try to ride this out until it's not a news story anymore.

We need a high profile campaign from M.A.D.D. (or anyone else as tenacious as they...) to put the screws on this slime ball "public servant" and get this purveyor of "poor judgment" OUT of the position of making public policy.

It's in the best interest of public safety after all.

Spitzer was kicked out after doing something embarrasing and wrong but that didn't endanger the lives of people. Krusse endangers our lives by driving drunk. He should be punished severely.

The best part of this is that he ended up getting the DUI DISMISSED due to insufficient evidence... what a joke!
