Frontage Roads increase accidents and create unfavorable environments, says TxDOT financed study.

In FRONTAGE ROADS: AN ASSESSMENT OF LEGAL ISSUES, DESIGN DECISIONS, COSTS, OPERATIONS, AND LAND-DEVELOPMENT DIFFERENCES (available at www.ce.utexas.edu/prof/kockelman/public_html/TRB02FrontageRoads.pdf)
Dr. Kara M. Kockelman of UT writes: "The twelve case studies of Austin-area frontage roads indicated that increased access density along frontage roads contributes substantially to crash and injury incidence."

Kockleman's study also says: "The results presented here suggest that land near frontage roads exhibits lower household incomes, lower population densities, lower percentages of bike trips to work, lower vehicle occupancies for work trips, and higher unemployment rates relative to its control corridor, constructed without frontage roads."

I'd bike to work more often if I didn't have to go on a frontage road. Austin should build more arterial roads instead of toll roads. Austin should build a commuter rail system like BART in San Francisco- the final car of the train allows bikes. Austin should go further and install wireless internet, AC outlets, and possibly a first class commuter car with tables so people can earn $$ while working on the ride to work- a benefit not possible while driving on the toll roads. Austin could earn more money by leasing part of a car to merchants like Starbucks. Austin could earn money by charging for A/C outlets as well. TOLLS are not creative. TOLLS harm everyone but the special interest. A train like this would make it attractive NOT to drive so no additional roads are needed in the first place.
