Just mandating elections to select a commissioner is NOT going to do away with special interests ruling over who gets the position.
There must be more oversight than that, say, getting the legislature to change the special interest campaign financing laws first!
Special interests just buy a bill or official and we need to stop that practice NOW!
Maybe I need someone to connect the dots (no, not those dots!) for me, but right now, I'm feeling a little underwhelmed.
Elected might be better than appointed--
but the Sunset recommendation to replace 3 appointed w/ 1 appointed is kind of lame, isn't it?
seems kind of like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic
only value is conveying that people are unhappy w/ TxDOT. Well, duh!
There's one fatal flaw with all of this. The Sunset Commission's recommendations ultimately have to be implemented via a bill introduced in the legislature. This means Tricky Ricky can engage in all kinds of shenanigans to make sure that a bill friendly to his interests gets through, not limited to vetoing the bill or threatening to bring the Lege back for special session after special session until they give him what he wants. As evidenced by the Swiss-cheese toll road moratorium last year, they'll cave, no question about it.
ann,
It's now 5 appointed, not 3.
