They're BAACKK! And they want ALL your money!

(from left to right) Sen. Kirk Watson, Council Member Brewster McCracken, Rep. Mike Krusee, Commissioner Gerald "Oak Hill Toller" Daugherty and Mayor Will Wynn are just some of the CAMPO board members seeking to implement the stealth toll tax on our Central Texas families. The hearings start Tuesday, Aug 21st!

CENTRAL TEXANS:
TAKE ACTION AND
SAVE $1,000’s A YEAR!

Stubborn, vampire like, tax hungry politicians are bringing Austin double tax tolls back up for a vote! Again!

Since 2004, with your help, we’ve been able to stop the special interest boondoggle of tolling roads we’ve already paid for. SADLY, WE NEED TO SPEAK UP AGAIN - or we’ll all pay $1,000’s of dollars a year more in double tax tolls, just to use Austin freeways. Beware, in some cases these slippery politicos have even started to use the word “managed lanes” instead of the dreaded “toll” word.

Greedy special interests, and their families, are now giving “YES, PLEASE TOLL ME” feedback - so they can make enormous profits. Shouldn’t your families feedback be counted as well?

WHY SHOULD YOU SPEAK UP AND
SAY “NO FREEWAY TOLLS”?

1) This crucial vote will cost your family $1,000’s of dollars a year.

2) This bloated tax and debt scheme is the most expensive solution for our families - it could cost us 30 times more - and it doesn’t even address the biggest congestion problem! - which is found on I-35.

3) 93% of the public feedback in 2004 said NO TOLLS, but these sneaky politicos are trying to slip one by us yet again, to help their fat cat contributors profit off our families.

4) These roads were already promised as freeways, and politicians like Mayor Will Wynn and Commissioner Gerald Daugherty seek an unaccountable taxation scheme that doesn’t use the “tax” word.

5) You and your family shouldn’t be forced to pay a toll, if you want to drive on the express portion of a freeway to get to work, school or shop! Slow service roads with stop lights is not an alternative - that line of crap is for suckers.

6) These freeway tolls are nothing more than unaccountable taxation.
JUST SAY "NO TOLLS and NO MANAGED LANES!" (just another word for tolls) CAMPO Public Hearings on the Toll Tax starts tomorrow - TUESDAY, August 21! THE SPECIAL INTERESTS WILL BE THERE - WILL YOU?

email from Don:

Hi Sal,

Thank for all your efforts to stop the politicians from steamrolling the public on the toll road issue. What they're doing is just criminal. The politicians and the corporations are in the process of completely taking over the entire decision-making process regarding state highways. The citizens are being completely left out of the equation. Mark Strama and Patrick Rose are not worthy of our trust on roads either from all that I have read.

I believe it's time to do two things: 1) take another poll of the public to determine what percentage of the public is opposed to toll roads (I'm sure it remains over 90%) and 2) pull together a slate of local and statewide candidates to oppose anyone on the ticket who is in favor of toll roads or will not commit one way or the other (like Mark Strama). Toll roads are such an important issue that NO politician who has the potential to vote on transportation bills before the Texas Legislature or could one day serve on the CAMPO or another regional board, should be allowed to avoid deciding their position on toll roads PRIOR to elections.

DENNIS SEND EMAIL TO CAMPO:

Hello CAMPO,

I am a life long Austin resident of forty-seven years. I travel this country via my pick up truck for my job.

I know many of you will not seek reelection in the next term. You still have time to make a difference for Texans today, and Texans of tomorrow. Isn't this what you feel you were elected to do?
I'm certain the majority of folks in our community didn't elect you to propose and force toll roads upon us.

Don't you think the cost of fuel, vehicle payments, vehicle maintenance, and vehicle taxes is enough for people to have to pay to commute?

I've had the privilege of traveling in most of the larger cities in this country. In every place I've been where there is a toll road, there has always been and alternative to travel on multiple ( Not two ) lane freeways to get to my destination. I was never forced to make a decision of paying a toll, or sitting at traffic lights.
But this is what this is coming to. I-35 through Austin is worse than Dallas, Houston, and even Chicago.
It doesn't seem to matter what the time of day, or day of the week. I-H 35 is a parking lot. And there never seems to be a reason. It's not the commercial truckers causing it either.

TX DOT needs to come up with a solution to this problem immediately. And the solution should not involve toll roads. I'm certain your aware that the current toll roads, the new Austin toll roads are not being utilized as anticipated. There is already talk of raising the tolls due to lack of riders.

What your proposing will force Austinites and others to drive toll roads. I can assure you, when this happens, there will be class action law suits filed. The only way you could be in favor of toll roads would be if you were Party to special interests.

Special interests which will be exposed as well as their financial affairs when all is said and done. You don't want a legacy like that.
Do the right thing. Tell TX DOT to provide an alternative to toll roads.

Shouldn't we expect to see an alternate to every solution? I know I would.

Thanks For Your Time
Dennis

J SENDS EMAIL TO CAMPO:

Please stop this ridiculous movement to tax us again on roads that have been paid for.

With elections looming in the future I can assure you I will be watching who votes for these new tolls (and "managed lanes").

This is not the only solution, please wake up.

Must every issue in our society become a battle between "the people" (an endangered species) and the pundits, the bureaucrats, and certain greedy & dishonest corporations? Who has TIME for this?! There are important, positive actions that need to be taken. This stuff is a major detour.

Why be stupid? [M o n e y ... ]

Q AND A:

Sal,

Can you point me to your source for when Williamson or TxDOT admitted it costs 25 cents per toll to collect the money?

Tom
------
Tom,

TOLLS ARE AN INEFFICIENT FORM OF TAX COLLECTION.

At a TxDOT commission hearing in October 2004, TxDOT had admitted it costs 25 cents to collect a cash toll, and 11 cents to collect an electronic toll. So, if the toll tax for a short span of road is 50 cents, 50% of the money paid for that toll goes to collect the toll.

Thanks
Sal

RICHARD TELLS CAMPO:

CAMPO,

Rather than charge people a toll to drive on highways they've already paid for, why don't you guys just cut your salaries in half?

What's that? That won't be enough to raise all the money you want? Then quit! Just get out of my government!
