Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst Sets Runoff Election Date for House District 48

AUSTIN – Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst today announced Feb. 14, as the runoff election date to fill the vacancy for House District 48. The seat was left vacant after Rep. Todd Baxter resigned on Nov. 1. The runoff is necessary because no candidate won a majority of the vote in the Jan. 17 special election.
The early voting period for this run-off election will begin on Feb. 6. The state representative elected in this special election will serve the remainder of the two-year term. House District 48 includes western Travis County.
The election was declared an emergency because a special legislative session on school finance must occur before the June 1 deadline for reform set by the Texas Supreme Court.
Dewhurst set the date for the runoff election in his capacity as acting governor; Gov. Rick Perry this week is on a bi-partisan Department of Defense-sponsored mission to visit Texas troops serving in the Middle East.
