Dear Lufkin Daily News Editor,

Re, "CLEMENTS: Who is the 'real' Carole Strayhorn?", (1/8/06)

I got a kick out of Cynthia Clements article slamming Carole Strayhorn, "Who is the 'real' Carole Strayhorn?", I hope your other readers realized that Gov. Perry was once a Democrat as well. But, Cynthia Clements failed to inform the readers of that fact.

The real truth is Gov. Rick Perry is not a conservative. Just months ago, church going Gov. Perry was caught on tape, using a slang profanity, telling a reporter, "Adios, MoFo."

Much more disturbing than his 'potty mouth', Gov. Rick Perry, the chief planning officer for the state of Texas, has directed his appointed highway henchmen who govern TxDOT to create a NEW tax on Texans. This sneaky new drivers tax, forced on Texans without public debate, privatizes and tolls our public highways, and will cost an average family $1,000's of dollars a year.

Some of the false information Gov. Perry has disseminated is "TxDOT has run out of money". A freedom of information request I just received a week ago shows TxDOT has $2.7 Billion of our tax dollars in the bank (that they have reserved to spend on freeway toll roads - only to make us pay again).

This double tax scheme is immoral, unconservative and unacceptable.

Traditional toll roads have been welcomed by the public because they are designed and built as whole new highways that let the public choose to use the toll road or a freeway expressway. Those traditional toll roads are funded primarily with investor dollars.

In contrast, Perry's "Freeway Tolls" are placed on our public highways. TxDOT uses our tax dollars to build them, and then charges us again to drive them to work, school or shop, for generations. TxDOT wants to get out of the transportation business and get into the revenue-generating business. When the freeway expressway is tolled, there is no other expressway as a free alternative! Privatizing and tolling our freeways will cause more traffic congestion on frontage roads with stop lights for those that can't or won't pay the $5 to $15 toll tax to go anywhere.

In contrast, Carole Strayhorn, Comptroller of Texas produced a report on the freeway tolling bureaucracy, the first Regional Mobility Authority in Texas (3/05) and found DOUBLE TAXATION, and NO BID contracts given out to the unelected board members and their friends: http://www.window.state.tx.us/specialrpt/ctrma05/

Gov. Perry does not represent our families. Gov. Perry represents the road and toll lobby who have contributed well over 1 million dollars to his campaign, as reported by TIME Magazine, "The next wave in super highways or a Big, Fat Texas Boondoggle?" 12/04. This bureaucratic new tax is not the work of a real conservative.

Sincerely,
Sal Costello,
