As you may be aware, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning to upgrade US 183, between IH 35 and SH 71, and SH 71, between IH 35 and SH 130. The existing roadways are four- to six-lane highways with signalized intersections. TxDOT proposes to construct four- to six-lane toll roads (two to three lanes in each direction) with four- to six- lane non-tolled frontage roads (two to three lanes in each direction).

TxDOT plans to hold three neighborhood open house events in Austin to allow residents and business owners the opportunity to provide input on how these highway improvements will fit into the surrounding neighborhoods, referred to as "context sensitive design".

Participants will be urged to offer suggestions and opinions on the design schematics and on drawings showing artistic concepts of the roadways, which will be on display throughout the open house. The same information will be presented at all three open house events. The neighborhood open house events will be held at the following times and locations as indicated below:

Monday, January 23, 2006, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
YMCA East Communities Branch, 5315 Ed Bluestein Blvd.

Tuesday, January 24, 2006, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Omni Hotel at Southpark, 4140 Governor's Row (near SH 71 at IH 35)

Monday, January 30, 2006, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
YMCA East Communities Branch, 5315 Ed Bluestein Blvd.

TxDOT staff will be available during each open house event to answer questions. A court reporter will be present to record verbal comments during the three open houses. Written comments will be accepted at the open house; or by mail to: Texas Department of Transportation - Austin

District, Environmental Coordinator, P.O. Box 15426, Austin, Texas 78761-5426; or by fax to (512) 832-7157. Comments must be received by February 9, 2006, to be incorporated into the official record for these events.

For further information on these open houses, please contact Bonnie Lister in the Environmental Section of the Austin District of TxDOT at (512) 832-7369.
