Citizens Fight Special Interest Road Bonds

Hays County citizens are fighting a $172 million bond proposal where special interest profiteers are scheming to get county tax dollars to pay for state roads.

The 19 miles of oversized roadways, up for a vote on May 12th in Hays County, would cause the usual bottlenecks at each end - that TxDOT is famous for. And, citizens say these are not even the Hays county roads that need to be upgraded. The public was not part of the process that decided on what roads would be put on the ballot - even the county’s transportation department was left out of the loop!

The story is the same across Texas, developers who purchased cheap land contribute to politicos (and hire ex-politicos like past County Commish Bill Burnett) and seek to have the public’s tax dollars pay for roads to their otherwise valueless property. Cost overruns cost more than what was budgeted as the special interests rob the taxpayer's candy store.
